Why SMS fees has put Amazon at loggerheads with Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone

Indian telecom companies Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone are clashing with multinational companies like Amazon in the country over the definition of international SMS and telecom traffic. Trai, Indian's telecoms regulator, floated a discussion paper on the topic. According to reports, Amazon contended that technological advancements had created solutions that didn't interact with any telecoms network. Jio hit back, labelling the comments as an attempt to justify non-compliance with regulatory requirements. Vodafone argued calling international SMS domestic SMS is akin to fraud.
